Tooth pain is generally caused by problems with the teeth or gums. The degree of pain ranges from slightly annoying to unbearably painful and although there are many reasons for these complications, here are 5 causes of tooth pain/toothache:

1.     Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, is a common reason for tooth and jaw pain caused by excessive teeth grinding or violent jaw clenching. It ends up weakening the enamel layer of your teeth and makes them more prone to pain and erosion at even the slightest application of pressure. Another cause of Bruxism is stress and anxiety but in most cases, the condition occurs while you are asleep and subconscious.

2.     Temperature Sensitivity

If you are experiencing tooth pain soon after eating or drinking something cold or hot, this is normally associated with tooth sensitivity to temperature. This can mean the enamel layer has deteriorated and worn down and as a result, your tooth is now exposed to pain.

3.     Gum Diseases

Gum diseases, dull or bleeding gums caused by plaque or gingivitis may also be the reason behind your tooth pain. Once the root behind your tooth area is affected, it also infects the surrounding areas and increases the risk of mouth infections.

4.     Improper Brushing

People often don’t pay attention to proper brushing or flossing. Applying extreme pressure while brushing may cause swelling, bleeding gums, inflammation or irritation, resulting in more pain. It is better to consult your dentist about the correct brushing and flossing techniques.

5.     Misaligned Teeth

Malocclusion is a condition that is most often hereditary. It is caused by childhood habits like tongue thrusting and thumb sucking or defects like abnormally shaped or extra teeth. This results in crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw that often presses on the teeth and causes pain.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, make sure you seek the assistance of your dentist immediately.
